Landscapes are complex systems in constant transformation, where natural processes, technological infrastructure, and cultural practices intertwine. It is within this tension that Scapes, the Festival dell’Acqua’s multi-year artistic and scientific research project, finds its place, challenging the centrality of the human gaze and opening the experience to what lies beyond our perceptual limits. The project unfolds through three interconnected strands (Under in 2026, Above in 2027, and Beyond in 2028), which articulate a layered reading of the world.
This first chapter, Scapes_Under, explores what lies underwater and underground, invisible or difficult to access: an interweaving of subterranean ecosystems, submerged forests, and dissolved presences that elude direct perception yet constitute a living archive of time and resonance.
Mauricio Valdés San Emeterio
Mauricio Valdés San Emeterio is a composer, curator, multimedia systems developer, and researcher with a thirty-year career, fifteen of which he has spent in Slovenia. He works at the intersection of sound, space, and technology, blending acoustic and electroacoustic music with advanced multimedia technologies. His work focuses primarily on live performance and the use of spatial audio systems; in this context, he serves as curator and head of research and development at the Kuber laboratory within the HEKA Art & Science Laboratory in Koper. He is the music program director for the International Computer Music Conference in Ljubljana and is a member of the PRISMA group at IRCAM in Paris.
